Inkanyezi Creche

How it began…

Choosing to hand out sandwiches made with love to the local community of Jamaica, Westville Presbyterian Church unknowingly made an enormous contribution to the informal settlement which is centred within Chesterville. By interacting with the people of Jamaica on a weekly basis in order to distribute the sandwiches, it soon became evident that the community had a far greater need, one which with dedicated teamwork, they could strive to meet.

Beset with the enormous burden of families been affected by HIV Aids, whilst simultaneously grappling with the burden of unemployment, it seemed that the hardest hit victims of the community were the children. Responding to the requests of the community, the Inkanyezi Crèche began to become a reality.

Blessed with generous donations to erect a building, construct a play ground, and to pay teacher’s salaries for a full year, the Inkanyezi Crèche opened on 13 January 2010, educating 30 children, with 5 full time employees and 1 volunteer. It has become a beacon of hope amongst the local people, proving that together even the smallest contribution can amount to social change. Read more…
