PRAYER FOR TODAY
Matthew 7:1-2: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Lord Jesus, on a scale of 1 to 10, my judgmentalism has slid upward, from a normal 3 to a reactionary 8. The irony is it’s been fuelled in response to the caustic culture we’re living in. I’m becoming critical of critical people. That’s a confession, not a justification.
Have mercy on me, the sinner. I really mean that, Jesus. You exhausted the judgment I deserve on the cross. You haven’t made me judge, jury, and executioner of anyone. Of course, this doesn’t mean we’re to be passive, “sweet,” or silent in response to wrongs, error, and evil. But I know the difference when I’m helping someone with the “speck in their eye,” versus wanting to “spit in their eye”-metaphorically speaking.
Soften my heart today, Holy Spirit. Gentle my heart with your kindness heavenly Father. Tenderize my heart with your mercy and grace, Lord Jesus. “Calling down fire” (Luke 9:54) isn’t the way of the Gospel, but calling down your Spirit is.
Bring the riches of the Gospel to bear upon my wrangling heart. Bring the power that raised Jesus from the dead to bear upon my uncensored inner monologue. Bring the hope of life in the new heaven and new earth to bear upon my bad attitude. So very Amen I pray, in Jesus’ powerful and beautiful name.
